Want to know the one secret ingredient these sandwiches have in common? It’s sprouted whole grain bread of course! Sprouted bread is an excellent source of protein, fibre, and whole grains—all the nutrients you need to conquer your day! Scroll down to see how much nutritional punch these sandwiches pack!

How to Make a Healthy Sandwich

When done right, a sandwich can be a satisfying, nutrient dense solution for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. All you need to do is stuff it with healthy, hearty, plant-based fillings! Look for ways to add plant-based proteins, healthy fats, and complex carbohydrates.

You can make any sandwich healthy by including at least one choice from each of these three secret nutritious ingredient categories:

  • Protein: tofu, nut or seed butters, beans (legumes, chickpeas, or sprouts), nut-based cheeses, and tempeh.
  • Healthy Fats: avocado, nut or seed butters, and olives or olive oil.
  • Good Carbs: vegetables (cucumbers, tomatoes, radishes), and leafy greens (spinach, lettuce, sprouts).

Although we tend to focus on the macronutrients we get from healthy foods, all of these plant-based ingredients and sprouted whole grains serve up a treasure trove of micronutrients too! Including essential vitamins and minerals, and antioxidant compounds, too.
