Looking for your next picnic, packed lunch, or platter pleaser? Look no further than our Kid-Friendly DIY Sandwich Skewers. This versatile recipe is an appetizer, snack or meal for all ages.

Change up the same-old by sharing food in different shapes and sizes and inviting kids to eat with their hands. Served with a side-sauce, kids and adults alike can dip and dunk these skewers for a full finger-food experience.

We’ve featured a three different types of skewers in this recipe: Peanut Butter Strawberry Banana, Vegan BLT, and Cheesy Tempeh Tortillas (served two ways!). But the options are endless—make it your own! Try cucumber and dairy-free cream cheese DIY sandwich skewers for teatime with teddy. Salvage the grilled cheese your toddler took one bite out of at lunch and serve it on a skewer with pickles and vegan bacon for dinner. Make grown-up DIY sandwich skewers by adding unique fillings or serving with a spicy dip (see our tips for more ideas).

DIY Sandwich Skewers - Perfect for Kids Lunch!

Ingredients

For the Peanut Butter Strawberry Banana Sandwich Skewers:

For the Vegan BLT Sandwich Skewers:

For the Cheesy Tempeh Tortilla Skewers:

  • 4 Silver Hills Sprouted Bakery Organic Spinach Tortillas (we used 2 Spinach and 2 Turmeric tortillas, for colour)
  • 4 slices vegan cheese (we used Chao cheese slices)
  • 1 bell pepper , cut into bite sized pieces
  • 1 sweet onion (such as Walla Walla or Vidalia), cut into bite sized pieces
  • 1 cup button mushrooms , whole or halved (depending on size)
  • 1 package (170g) smoked tempeh  (we used Lightlife Smoky Tempeh Strips)
  • 4 Tbsp hummus (for dipping)

Instructions

For the Peanut Butter Strawberry Banana Sandwich Skewers:

  1. Spread peanut butter and jam to make sandwiches
  2. Cut sandwiches and fruit into bite-sized pieces
  3. Skewer fruit and sandwich pieces, alternating as you like

For the Vegan BLT Sandwich Skewers:

  1. Cut bread slices into squares (toast first, if desired)
  2. Prepare vegan bacon and cut into squares
  3. Cut cheese slices into squares
  4. Skewer bread, vegan bacon, cherry tomatoes, butter lettuce, and cheese
  5. Serve with vegan mayo

For the Cheesy Tempeh Tortilla Skewers:

  1. Cut tortillas into strips, then fold into squares
  2. Cut smoked tempeh into squares
  3. Cut cheese slices into squares
  4. Cut bell peppers and onions into bite-sized pieces
  5. Skewer tortillas, tempeh, cheese, and vegetables
  6. Serve with hummus

Alternative Preparation: Deconstructed Cheesy Tempeh Tortillas:

  1. Dice bell pepper, sweet onion, and mushrooms
  2. Sauté vegetables on medium-low heat until soft (about 8 minutes)
  3. Layer vegetables, cheese, and tempeh between two tortillas
  4. Fry tortillas in pan until golden and cheese is melted
  5. Cut tortillas into squares and serve with hummus

Try these handy tips!

  • Experiment with the serving dips to make them kid-friendly or an adult crowd-pleaser. For the vegan BLT sandwich, you can serve the skewer with plain vegan mayo, or we made a chipotle mayo with minced chipotle peppers, garlic powder, pepper and vegan mayo for the grown-ups.
