This is no fruit salad. This wacky and wonderful combo is delightfully refreshing! Our Sweet & Spicy Watermelon Relish recipe pairs juicy, hydrating chunks of summer-fresh watermelon, with crisp cucumber and cooling mint. Followed up with a subtle spicy surprise from jalapeño that turns this tasty topping into a sassy salsa sure to make you smile.

Sweet with a little bit of heat, this tasty, watermelon relish is the perfect topping for your veggie dog on a beautiful summer day. Or serve with summer barbecue favourites like saucy pulled jackfruit sandwiches, snack toasts, and more!

Skip the jalapeños if you (or your kids) aren’t up for spice. But the spice in our Watermelon Relish isn’t an all-or-nothing affair. Unlike store bought salsas, when you DIY you can dial the heat up or down! Use half a small jalapeño, seeded, and finely minced for a mild but flavourful version with just a hint of heat. Or delight the hot sauce lovers at your table—buy the biggest jalapeños at the farm stand and go for a larger dice! (Or select the small but stealthy spice of a more potent pepper if you so dare.)

Try these handy tips!

  • Our Sweet & Spicy Watermelon Relish is best enjoyed right away. But if you have any leftovers or have this on your easy meal prep list for a summer soiree, store them in a covered container in your fridge for 2 to 3 days.
  • Even without salt, watermelon adds extra juice to salads, salsas, and relish recipes like this one—the longer you leave it, the bigger the pink puddle it makes. If you make this ahead to take to tomorrow’s backyard barbecue or have leftovers, serve them with a slotted spoon or fork to leave the extra juice in the bowl. No one wants a soggy bun or the rest of their meal swimming in a pool on their plate!
