At Silver Hills, we believe organic farming is healthier for people and the environment. Here’s why:

Better for People

A study published in the Journal of Applied Nutrition concluded that organic food contain more vitamins and minerals like vitamin C, calcium, and iron than conventionally grown food1. The Organic Centre1 also found that organic food has 30% higher levels of antioxidants than non-organic versions of the same products2 and suggests that organic food delivers more intense and complex flavours, possibly due to the absence of artificial colouring, sweeteners and preservatives, which are prohibited under organic guidelines3.

Organic foods also contain fewer chemical residues and pesticides. In fact, according to the Environmental Working Group, you can reduce your pesticide intake by as much as 80% by buying organic versions of  ‘the dirty dozen’, the twelve fruits and vegetables that have the most pesticides. You won’t find any genetically modified ingredients in organic foods either because GMOs are banned by organic standards.

Better for the Environment

Organic products are grown and processed using environmentally friendly farming methods that include no or very limited amounts of chemical additives such as fertilizers, herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, antibiotics or hormones often used in conventional agriculture. Instead, organic producers use alternative methods such as crop rotation, weeding and integrated pest management to maximize yield and minimize diseases. This translates into fewer chemicals being released into the air and water supply. In addition, organic production gives off less carbon dioxide, which is the largest contributor to global warming.

Organic farms are also at the forefront of the movement to preserve rare and heirloom seed varieties which helps protects genetic diversity, decreasing the risk of disease and insect attacks that often plague monocultures.

There you have it… incorporating organic into your life makes good sense for you and the planet! That’s why we make our Silver Hills’ breads, bagels and buns with a high percentage of organic ingredients.
